Located in Alexandria, Virginia just off I-395, Fort Ward actually dates to the Civil War and thus has no real connection to the American Revolution. However, Fort Ward hosts an annual Revolutionary War reenactment on President’s Day weekend which means that Fort Ward is the unofficial start of the reenactment campaign season for 4th Coy.
Fort Ward was one of 161 earthen forts that protected the city of Washington during the Civil War. Constructed in 1861 following the first Battle of Bull Run, the fort was never attacked by Confederate forces and was dismantled at the end of 1865. Today, the facility includes a Museum built in the style of buildings that might have existed in similar forts, an officer’s hut, and a reconstructed section of the fort that looks as it would during the Civil War.
Please feel free to use the Google Maps gadget below to help plan your visit to Fort Ward. For the event, reenactor parking is within the park, following the entrance off of West Braddock Road. Public parking is along West Braddock Road as the outer lanes are closed to traffic.
