Historic Colonial Williamsburg is a favorite playground for Crown reenactors who, once a year, get to “take over” the town for a weekend in an event known as “Under The Redcoat”. The event starts with a march-in early Friday afternoon, with a small group of dirty, grubby infantry soldiers slowly making their way through the potentially hostile streets on their way first to the Capitol Building and back to the Courthouse to secure the town and await the rest of the provost guard. Union Jack over the Capitol BuildingSaturday and Sunday are spent patrolling the town, drilling the provost guard, and engaging in friendly firing competitions with other units. A more recent addition to the reenactment calendar has been “Prelude to Victory”, a small event in October where a small group of British reeanctors play the opposition to the Continental version of “Under The Redcoat”.

Historically, Crown Forces did find themselves in Williamsburg for a short period of time. In June of 1781, Lord Cornwallis led the exhausted British forces from North Carolina to Williamsburg, stopping for a brief rest before continuing on to Yorktown. Union Jack over the Capitol Building“Under The Redcoat” takes place each year on the last weekend in June, meaning that it is one of the hottest events on the calendar. The 2008 edition saw temperatures that topped 100 degrees!

The official website of Colonial Williamsburg has a wealth of information about the site, including interactive maps, event calendars, and local information. There is even a short film from a past Under The Redcoat that prominently features members of 4th Coy in action.
