Carlyle House

Address – 121 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA
Website – http://www.nvrpa.org/parks/carlylehouse/

Located in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia and the residence of John Carlyle. John Carlyle was an early leading figure of Alexandria whose fortune was made in trade and served as a commissary for the Virginia militia in both the Seven Years War (sometimes referred to as the French and Indian War) and the American War for Independence.

The British army was in Alexandria in small numbers during the Seven Years War and not at all during the American War for Independence, so the appearance of the Guards (or any Crown forces, for that matter) in Alexandria is somewhat of an anachronism. However, during the Seven Years War, General Braddock used the Carlyle House as his headquarters and called a conference of colonial governors to discuss the financing of the British expeditions in the North American colonies. General Braddock was a Coldstream officer, so there is a Guards connection to both Alexandria and this site.
