By now, all members of 4th Coy should have received an e-mail with additional details about contributing to the memorial at Guilford Courthouse. The good news is that response has been strong and we should be able to meet this author’s goal of a $1000 contribution to the fund. Its time to reset that goal to exceed $1000.
As a little reminder of what this memorial is for, please read this passage from Brigadier General Charles O’Hara to the Duke of Grafton, after the battle at Guilford Courthouse -
we feel at the moment, the sad and fatal effects of our loss on that Day, nearly one half of our best Officers and Soldiers were either Killed or Wounded, and what remains are so completely worn out, by the excessive Fatigues of the Campaign in a march of above a Thousand Miles, most of them barefoot, naked and for days together living upon Carrion, which they had often not time to dress, and three or four ounces of unground Indian Corn has totally distroy’d this Army…
immediately after the Battle, we remained on the very ground on which it had been fought cover’d with Dead, with Dying and with hundreds of Wounded, Rebels, as well as our own. A Violent and constant Rain that lasted above Forty Hours made it equally impracticable to remove or administer the smallest comfort to many of the Wounded.

OK Guardsmen – time to pony up. Send your donations to me and I will consolidate and cut one Coy check (with matching funds) to be delivered to the appropriate official. I will also inclue the names of all members and friends of the Coy who decide to participate in this endeavor. Just as an added incentive – I know where you all live — and I’m originally from New Jersey.
