The Battle of Guilford Courthouse was a significant event in the American War for Independence, and a significant event for the Brigade of Guards in their service to the Crown while in the colonies. Every member of 4th Coy recognizes the sacrifices borne by the British soldiers on that day. However, of the 28 memorials and monuments that currently dot the battlefield, only one recognizes the British forces. It is well overdue that a fitting monument be dedicated to the common British soldier that fought so bravely in what was a distant land.
The Guilford Battlefield Company has taken on this worthy cause, commissioning a design to memorialize the sacrifice, the valor, and the courage of the British soldier. Colonel Lloyd, who enjoyed the company mess at the 225th event at Guilford Courthouse, has obtained donations from a number of British Army regimental organizations. Some of these regiments fought at Guilford Courthouse. As noted on their website, men and women of these regiments have fought alongside American forces on battlefields around the world, right up to our current conflicts in the Middle East.
Now it is time for the reenactment community, and 4th Coy in particular, to step to the plate. Any contribution will help. The Guilford Battlefield Company is about half way to their goal of raising $15,000. All organizations involved in this endeavor are 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. Any contribution you make is tax deductible.
Members, check your e-mails for more details on the Coy’s plans for support of this monument. We’ll publish the details.
