A small group of 4th Coy made the trip to Jerusalem Mill just north of Baltimore. For much of the group, this was their first time at the site and it served as a small preview of one of next year’s larger events. What we found was an absolutely gorgeous site, with wide open spaces, wooded trails, and distance from 21st century distractions.

We were joined by our newest drummer, a talented fifer that will nicely complement our current musicians. Also making an appearance was our wayward civilian follower, yet another talented musician.

The scenario for the Saturday demonstration was for 4th Coy to play a part of the light infantry group, screening the larger crown force main body. The continental forces approached the clearing from one set of the woods, while the light infantry forces emerged from another set of the woods. Quickly deploying at open order to cover as much ground as possible, 4th Coy formed the left flank of the light infantry forces, which also meant that when the main body came on line to the left of the light infantry, 4th Coy was covering the right flank. The resulting battle was a fierce powder burner with plenty of opportunity for maneuver among the brush and lon trees in the clearing. The spectator area was at the top of a natural amphitheater, providing a great vantage point to observe the action.

As always, it was a pleasure to be working with the Highlanders of the 42nd and 84th. And compliments should be paid to the Continental forces, who were drilling in brigade and battalion formations, perhaps providing the crown forces with the motivation to follow suit. All in all, a great event and the company is looking forward to returning to the site in the spring.
