The annual Fort Ward event unofficially marks the start of the campaign season. The night before the event, members and families of 4th Coy met for food, drink, and fellowship. Despite the weather challenges, turn out was strong and a good time was had by all.
The event itself was structured differently than past years because of the ice storms leading up to the event. The field used for drilling and the afternoon skirmish was covered with a solid sheet of ice, which made footing tricky. Leading up to the skirmish, 4th Coy made the best of the situation to get in as much drilling as possible, concentrating on the manual of arms and doing whatever marching could be done in the limited are free of snow and ice. The decision was made to keep the marching to a minimum for the skirmish, so the scenario was greatly reduced to the two sides firing volleys at each other from opposite sides of the field. Regardless, it gave 4th Coy an opportunity to work on firing volleys in preparation for later events and the next day’s parade.
New to 4th Coy this year was participation in Alexandria, VA’s annual President’s Day Parade. 4th Coy fell in behind the 1st VA, marching behind them the length of the parade route. Near the end of the route, 4th Coy and the 1st VA took the opportunity for a small skirmish in the streets of Old Town Alexandria. Both groups traded volleys, with the skirmish ending in a fixed bayonet charge. 4th Coy retired to the American Legion building for food and drinks with the 1st VA. Much thanks to this organization for the invitation to jointly participate in the parade.
